AMD Navi RX 5700 XT Vs Nvidia RTX 2070 Super, Cost to Performance Game FPS Analysis
Comments
Yesterday was launch day for AMD’s RX 5700 & the RX 5700 XT and both cards were long awaited, heralding in the 7nm architecture known as Navi.
Pre-launch AMD took 30 and 50 dollars off their RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT launch price tags, respectively. They did this to compete with the Nvidia RTX 2070 Super and the RTX 2060 Super cards that Nvidia slipped in unannounced just ahead of the RX 5000 series grand launch. You know, to steal a bit of the thunder from the grand unveiling of the AMD Navi cards. How do we feel about all this as GPU hungry gamers? Well, when companies start slashing prices of things we want to buy, we normally encourage it.
Originally AMD were expecting their new Navi GPUs to go head to head with the original RTX 2060 and RTX 2070. And so this changed the mid to high range GPU playing field when the Super versions landed out of know where.
While yesterday we took a deep dive into what gamers really care about, which is sheer performance per dollar when looking at those original Nvidia RTX 2060 and RTX 2070. Pop over to see how well they stack up against each. Its certainly delivers some interesting reading.
AMD Navi RX 5700 XT Game FPS Benchmarks, Specs, Prices compared To Nvidia RTX 2070
Today we will be focusing on how these first two RX 5000 series Navi cards look under the price to performance assessment when compared to the RTX 2070 Super and the RTX 2060 Super.
A point of note is that the new Navi cards do not support anything like Nvidia’s latest tech-hype, ray tracing technology. Which is an effect Nvidia introduced in their RTX range cards to deliver more realistic lighting and reflections in game. Its impressive slooking stuff if you see it in a game, but do we actually miss it if we havent seen it before? However, the same can be said for all advancements in this area. And without them, where would we be? Anyway, these AMD Navi graphics solutions counter this tech with their own Radeon Image Sharpening and Radeon Anti-Lag.
What does the RX 5000 series tech feature called Image Sharpening do?
This new Navi architecture feature returns lost graphics clarity, in-game, due to other post-processing graphics enhancing effects.
What does the RX 5000 series tech feature called Radeon Anti-Lag do?
This new in-game graphics technology is largely a boost for competitive play. It will reduce response time between a player input and the action carried out on display by up to a reported 31%.
But lets face it, we want to see raw value for money when we research our next GPU purchase and while one GPU might look pretty or another might have two cooling fans, that sort of info is normally reserved by us as tie breakers. Is it a price to performance tie between the RX 5700 XT and the RTX 2070 Super, where that sort of thing is going to come heavily into our decision making process? Lets go and have a look at what the numbers are telling us to find out.

Lets drill down into some of those FPS comparisons and see what real cost to performance the head to head RX 5000 and Super RTX series can muster.
Below we have some spreadsheets filled with dollar price to performance figures based on the returned FPS. First off we will start by looking at the RX 5700 XT 1080p results and how it stacks up against the RTX 2070 Super and the RTX 2060 Super, when we factor in how much you have to pay for the graphics card at todays prices.
We also covered how the RX 5700 XT price to performance stacks up against the non-Super RTX 2060 and RTX 2070. In case you are thinking of getting one of the original RTX cards instead.
Remember its better if the graphics card has a lower dollar cost per frame rate achieved. Basically we are looking to pay less for more FPS.
1080p RX 5700 XT dollar price to performance game analysis and comparison to RTX 2060 Super and RTX 2070 Super
Right so the 1080p FPS dollar price to performance bar chart above makes it easier to see. At 1080p the dollar cost to frame rate achieved is always more on the green (Nvidia) bars compared to the red (AMD) bars apart from on Wolfenstein 2, where the two red bars slightly push above the Green bars. Meaning AMD’s new Navi cards are coming out better value for money on some of the latest AAA games.
1080p Winner for price to performance is the AMD RX 5700 with an average dollar per frame rate cost of $3.79. Followed closely by the AMD RX 5700 XT at $3.93 per FPS.
1440p RX 5700 XT dollar price to performance game analysis and comparison to RTX 2060 Super and RTX 2070 Super
Its looking pretty much the same here at 1440p. The price to performance charts again show that its only Wolfenstein 2 which is more cost effective to play on Nvidia Super RTX cards. We can see a bit about a $2 jump up per FPS across the 1440p compared to the lower resolutions of the 1080p.
1440p Winner for price to performance is the AMD RX 5700 with an average dollar per frame rate cost of $5.08. Again closely trailed by its launch partner card, AMD RX 5700 XT, with $5.10 per FPS.
4K RX 5700 XT dollar price to performance game analysis and comparison to RTX 2060 Super and RTX 2070 Super
4K Winner for price to performance is…again the AMD RX 5700 with an average dollar per frame rate cost of $9.28. The AMD RX 5700 XT also comes in second with $9.49 per FPS.
Thats an increase of around $4 per frame rate when comparing 4K versus 1440p gaming on the RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT. This is about a $5 increase for the Nvidia RTX 2060 Super and RTX 2070 Super cards.
Conclusion and Gamer Insight
While this shows that on the games tested the Navi RX 5700 XT cards were the price to performance winners over their rivals, its worth noting that the RTX 2070 Super always delivered more average frames per second in each resolution category looked at. So for some of us we want to always get the most FPS for our bucks, whereas some others of us might be more interested in paying a little more, knowing that we only upgrade our GPU once every handful of years, and ensuring a bit more future proof in our choice. Now the RTX ray tracing tech might not be fully fledged across all games yet, you just know that Nvidia are dropping support teams directly into big game developer studios, probably for free, just to help bump start the adoption of ray tracing across the next lump of AAA games. Who knows, perhaps Cyberpunk 2077 has just had an Nvidia squad integrated into their dev studio.
We look forward to hearing your thoughts on all this below and again cast your opinion on the poll to let everyone know where you stand on the GPU upgrade choice.
