I’m a big fan of the Yakuza series, although I have to admit I was more than a little taken aback to discover Yakuza 7, or Yakuza: Like a Dragon as it’s now known, is throwing out the action-packed beat-em-up hijinks in favour of turn-based combat. It’s Yakuza meets Dragon Quest and it’s basically the answer to my dreams.

We’ve got our first few trailers for Yakuza: Like a Dragon during Tokyo Game Show this week, including an announcement trailer that’s all cinematic goodness, along with a batshit insane gameplay trailer. I see laser beams from space, Mario Kart, handbag beat downs, crayfish summons, grown men in nappies (seen a few of them lately), and I don’t even know what’s going on in that cinema.

It all looks frankly magnificent, to be honest, and is proof positive there’s life after the Kazuma Kiryu saga. Yakuza 7 features Ichiban Kasuga as the new protagonist, a low-ranking Yakuza who emerges from an 18-year prison sentence to try and reclaim his place in the clan.

Do we have any idea at all what’s going on? Not really, but that’s all part of the charm of Yakuza, until it’s finally in your hands and it all makes sense.

Sega has confirmed Yakuza: Like a Dragon will be coming West on PS4 at some point in 2020, while the Japanese release is locked in for January 12th, 2020. We really are getting spoiled with all these Yakuza games coming West these days.
