Gearbox has announced the first post-launch campaign add-on for Borderlands 3, the first of many, we suspect. Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jackpot will be a paid expansion coming to Borderlands 3 on December 19th, just in time for some holiday looting and shooting.

The basic gist of this expansion, and there may be spoilers for Borderlands 3 here, I have literally no idea, is that Moxxi has taken control of a derelict space station once owned by Handsome Jack. She’s renovated it, naturally, and turned it into the ultimate gambling spot if you don’t mind risking a bullet to the head.

Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jackpot includes a new area to explore with multiple new zones, a campaign centred around a casino heist, new enemy types, bosses, and the bit everyone’s itching for – new Legendary weapons and gear.

In order to access Moxxi’s Heists it’s recommended you’re at least level 13, so you’ll be able to head in there fairly early and play it alongside the main campaign. As with Borderlands 2 the level of the DLC will also scale upwards with you and deliver appropriately more powerful loot.

Moxxi’s Heists of the Handsome Jackpot is the first of four DLC packs coming to Borderlands 3. At the moment it doesn’t look as if you can buy it piecemeal but it is part of both the £40 Season Pass and the £105 Borderlands 3 Super Deluxe Edition. Not cheap, then, so you’re probably best off waiting until the inevitable complete game of the year edition arrives in 2020.

If all that seems a little expensive for your tastes, there is also a free content update coming Borderlands 3’s way. Takedown at the Maliwan Blacksite is a four-player raid-type challenge designed for max level characters. There’s spawning restrictions in play as well, Destiny-style, so this should pose a fearsome challenge to the Borderlands 3 diehards.

Takedown at the Maliwan Blacksite will launch “imminently” on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, while Moxxi’s Heist will be out on December 19th.
