Rumour: Next AC is Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok, Viking-themed RPG in Scandinavia and England

Comments

There’s a whole ton scuttlebutt doing the rounds in regards to the next mainline Assassin’s Creed game. Earlier this year we had extensive leaks which pointed toward the 2020 Assassin’s Creed title being Viking-themed, and now even more details have emerged which appear to back this up.

Having rested the Assassin’s Creed franchise for 2019, at the very least a new AC title in 2020 appears to be given. But, first of all, we’ve got an alleged name – Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok. Fans of Norse mythology will be aware that Ragnarok was a time in which Earth was destroyed by cataclysmic natural disasters, great battles, and the death of a number of key Viking gods. That sounds legit enough, particularly with Ubisoft diving deeper and deeper into ancient mythos with Assassins Creed: Origins and Assassins Creed: Odyssey.

The leaks then further detail that AC: Ragnarok will be set around 800AD on a map which covers both Scandinavia and England, including the cities of London and Plymouth. That detail alone would indicate that Ragnarok at least covers the entire south coast of England. There will be sailing, although supposedly less of a focus on naval combat when compared to Odyssey.

As with AC Odyssey, the leaker claims players will be able to choose between a man and a woman and, surprise surprise, they’ll become a member of the Assassin’s Brotherhood during the game. It’s claimed Ragnarok will be a classic revenge tale featuring the story of the First Civilization, a highly advanced humanoid species who existed on Earth several millennia ago.

It is claimed that Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok will lean pretty far into the Norse mythos, including visits to fantastical realms such as Asgard, Jottenheim, and Yggdrasil. Deities such as Odin and Loki will also be an integral part of the story.

Lastly, on the gameplay front, the leak alleges that AC: Ragnarok will lean even further into the RPG elements adopted by Origins and Odyssey. We’re talking all the usual questing, levelling up, and stats-based gear.

As with any rumours of this sort, take it all with a hefty pinch of salt. There’s certainly a lot of smoke billowing around next year Assassin’s Creed though, in particular referencing it being a Viking-themed title. Kotaku’s Jason Schreier claimed as much back in April, and also backed up that the then-unannounced Watch Dogs Legion would be set in London.

Ubisoft can obviously settle this once and for all by revealing the thing. Assuming there is a new Assassin’s Creed game in 2020, Ubisoft tends to reveal them during the springtime. However, a further leak claims that Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok could be revealed during a special PlayStation 5 reveal event in February.

What do you think then, do these rumours sound legit enough for you? Would you be pleased to see Assassin’s Creed head to Scandinavia? Let us know your thoughts below!
