As sure as the day is long, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be getting a battle royale mode. Anyone who’s had the displeasure of trying out its co-op Spec Ops campaign will have spotted what is clearly the template for a huge battle royale map. Now though, a huge data mining leak has spilled plenty of details on what to expect, including spilling the beans on its massive 200-player last man standing zone.
First of all, COD: Modern Warfare’s full battle royale map has leaked, including all of the different distinct zones and points of interest. It’s stitched together from all of the Spec Ops and Ground War 64-player maps, plus a whole lot more besides. Areas include Airfield, Boneyard, Quarry, Trainyard, Hospital, and more.
The default rules for Battle Royale in COD: Modern Warfare are pretty standard, although doubling up to 200 players is anything but. There will be solos, duos and squads (4) playlists, with the aim being to eliminate every opponent and come out the victor. You’ll be able to revise teammates and all the usual battle royale shenanigans. At the end-game there will be a radar in play which is presumably designed to restrict camping.
As ever, there will be loot with weapons and attachments of varying rarity, from white through to green, blue, purple and gold. There’ll also be gas masks, armour vests, helmets, bandages, backpacks, and ammo. If you’ve played PUBG or COD: Black Ops 4 – Blackout, you know the drill by now.
In a bit of a twist, there will also be ‘Gulag’ on by default. The Gulag showers are a 2v2 Gunfight map which is already in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. It would appear players who die in the battle royale are thrown into the Gulag Prison Camp and wait their turn for a 1v1 fight. The winner gets to respawn and head back into the fight. All players who are dead will be spectate in the Gulag and queue up for their turn to be able to head back in. Players will also be able to bet on the 1v1 fights and earn ‘Plunder’ in return. This can be spent at ‘Plunder Box’ locations, much like Fortnite’s vending machines. Here players will be able to purchase special weapons, perks, killstreaks, etc.

The big question now is when? It’s a ton of work, that’s for sure, and we’ve not heard anything official from Activision or Infinity Ward just yet. We would imagine it’ll be used for a post-holidays sales bump for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, although there is the off-chance the battle royale mode could be with us before the holidays. I’d at least my inclined to wait until they’ve sorted player visibility out to an acceptable degree.
