You’d think, what with Marvel being the biggest name in cinema today, that putting together a tie-in Marvel’s Avengers game would be an absolute gimme. You’ve got millions of Marvel movie fans with a thirst for milquetoast superhero action; just bang together a video game and everyone’s a winner, surely? Well, not necessarily. The reaction to Square Enix’s Marvel’s Avengers has been unenthusiastic, to say the least, in particular from those that have actually seen gameplay demonstrations or had some hands-on time.
We’re casting a wary eye over Marvel’s Avengers then, even with the twin talents of Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics overseeing this third-person action-adventure title. All is not lost though, with almost a full year between its E3 reveal and it’s eventual launch on May 15th, 2020. That’s plenty of time to turn this ship around and Marvel’s Avengers is already beginning to look markedly different with the latest game overview trailer. This is a breakdown of all the core systems in Marvel’s Avengers – what you’ll be doing, who you’ll be playing as, and which bits you can play with friends.
There’s a little bit of Destiny to its loot and gear mechanics, while heroes can also be customised through skills and abilities which can be selected from extensive skill trees. Square Enix has also provided some context on the split between single-player hero missions and war-zone missions which can be played with up to four players.
Join us in being cautiously optimistic that Marvel’s Avengers could end up an enjoyably mindless beat-em-up time when it comes to PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia on May 15th, 2020.
