We’ve all had multiple opportunities to go hands-on with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare but we still haven’t been given many details at all about its ray-tracing support on Nvidia GeForce RTX hardware. Team Green has finally thrown us a few bones though, announcing the recommended system requirements for COD: Modern Warfare’s raytracing features. This comes after COD: Modern Warfare’s standard PC system specs were revealed yesterday.
PC players can benefit from ray-traced shadow on GeForce hardware, as well as higher-quality graphical effects which aren’t possible on any other platform. The official Call of Duty: Modern Warfare PC system requirements suggest the GeForce RTX 20 series should be able to run the ray-traced shadows perfectly, and can improve performance further by enabling Nvidia Adaptive shading. This feature uses machine learning to identify the shading rate of pixels and can help with the performance hit of rendering shadows.
Recommended (w/ Ray Tracing) | High/Competitive | Ultra | |
Experience | 1080p/60fps Ray Tracing | 1080p 144fps | 4K/60fps Ray Tracing |
GPU | Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 6GB | Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super 8GB | Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Super 8GB |
CPU | Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD Ryzen R5 1600X | Intel i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 1800X | Intel i7-9700K or AMD Ryzen 2700X |
RAM | 12GB | 16GB | 16GB |
HDD | 175GB | ||
OS | Win 10 64-bit |
The good news is that a GeForce RTX 2060, the lowest tier of ray-tracing GPU, can run COD: Modern Warfare 1080p/60FPS with Ray Tracing enabled. Nvidia hasn’t given a graphics preset but we’d presume this is for High or Ultra.
Further up the ladder, the GeForce RTX 2070 Super can handle 1080p 144FPS, which sounds like a fantastic effort. Based on that we’d presume 1440p/60FPS is also perfectly achievable.
Finally, for those who want the best of the best, Nvidia’s Ultra ray tracing system requirements claim a GeForce RTX 2080 Super will be able to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare at 4K, 60 frames per second, with ray-traced shadows enabled. The top-end GeForce RTX 2080 Ti will have performance to spare, even at 4K Ultra.
We’ll have to wait and see whether these ray tracing requirements are actually accurate. Straight from the horse’s mouth isn’t probably a mantra you should trust when said horse is a multinational corporation trying to selling $350+ graphics cards. But, the initial signs are certainly promising, particularly with the claims of high-resolution support for some of the top-end RTX GPUs. Not all ray-traced games fare this well; look no further than Control for an example of just how demanding ray-tracing can ultimately be, depending on the extent of its implementation.
