Ambitious 1000-player battle royale title Mavericks: Proving Grounds has proven perhaps a little too ambitious. Developer Automaton Games has entered administration (become insolvent) and Maverick: Proving Grounds has been cancelled.
Revealed around 18 months ago, Mavericks had attracted the attention of DayZ creator Dean Hall after touting ultra-high player counts and the usage of Improbably’s SpatialOS cloud platform. Proving Grounds is the second SpatialOS title to be cancelled recently following the closure of Bossa Studio’s Worlds Adrift.
“Paul Cooper and Paul Appleton were appointed joint administrators of Automaton Games Limited on 30th July 2019,” reads a statement of Mavericks: Proving Grounds official site. “They are managing the affairs, business and property of the company… Please be advised that due to insufficient funding, the development of the Mavericks: Proving Grounds game has now ceased.
“The joint administrators are in the process of licensing the Deceit game so there will be no change in the live operation and provision of this game.”
Getting a 100-player battle royale popular enough to support the player is tough enough, but 1000 always seemed frankly obscene. Automaton Games would’ve required an immense critical mass of players at launch that was always a formidable task. Another battle royale bites the dust.
Best of luck to those affected by the closure.
