Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has some great news or terrible news for Splinter Cell fans, depending on which side of the fence you sit on.
We’ll start with the great news – Guillemot has yet again reiterated that Ubisoft is working on the Splinter Cell brand yet again. To quote, they are “working a lot on the brand”. This echoes his sentiments from earlier in the year in which he confirmed fans will see more from the Splinter Cell brand but it’s not quite a top priority.
And now for the bad news. If you were holding out hope for a traditional Splinter Cell game or, heck, even a traditional PC version of whatever it is, Guillemot has said Ubisoft is experimenting with Splinter Cell on “different devices.”
In his full comment to GamerSky during ChinaJoy 2019, Yves said “On Splinter Cell there will be some new type of experiments, but more on different devices. We are working a lot on the brand today to come back at one point. We can’t say when because as you know it takes time, but we have to find which time is right to come back big.”
After this statement, we can only really come up with two potential options. Either Ubisoft is experimenting with a mobile version of Splinter Cell or those rumours of Splinter Cell VR actually had a ring of truth to them.
For those staunchly opposed to VR, the idea of the next Splinter Cell being a virtual-reality title probably doesn’t sit too well. It would be an awesome fit, in truth, with incredible potential for immersion, but those hoping for a traditional Splinter Cell should brace themselves for some disappointment.
