We’re not entirely sure who’s been crying out for it but it looks as if Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare is back for round three. There have been rumours circulating for well over a year now that Electronic Arts is planning to do something with the multiplayer third-person shooter series once again, but now the catnip is out of the bag.
Rather than plump for Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 3 though, it would appear EA is going for a reset of sorts. A new trademark has been filed for Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville. Hideosly Hideously, they’ve even managed to spell ‘neighbour’ wrong.
Testing for the game already appears to be taking place among EA’s inner circle of PvZ fans. Some sort of test has been running with the codename ‘Picnic’, although we’re not privy to many details. We do have a trio of images which some naughty so and so has managed to pull from the test though, including which appears to back up the description below which refers to three free-roam regions and one social region. It’s going full-blown Destiny over here.
And, if that weren’t enough, EA even briefly posted a listing for the game on its official website, along with a small blurb. “Kick some grass in Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville, the wackiest shooter yet! Unearth 20 fully customizable character classes, one social region, three free-roam regions, nine PvP modes including 4v4 Battle Arena and more!” Yep, that definitely sounds like Garden Warfare alright.
The only questions remaining now are when will Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville be revealed and when is EA hoping to launch it. In terms of the former, we expect Gamescom in Cologne on August 24th to be a suitable date. When it comes to the latter, EA has a gaping hole where a multiplayer shooter should be this holiday season. DICE has been relied upon to trot out one of Star Wars Battlefront or Battlefield every year lately, but they’re taking a break this time around. That’s probably for the best, truth be told.
