And the countdown is up – Need For Speed Heat has officially been revealed, and we’ve got the first trailer. All those leaks and rumours have turned out to be spot on.
Developed by Ghost Games once again, Need For Speed Heat takes players to the neon-soaked glow of Palm City. I’m expecting Tommy Vercetti to lift his head up from a mountain of cocaine and say Hi at any moment.
“Hustle by day and risk it all at night in Need for Speed Heat, a white-knuckle street racer, where the lines of the law fade as the sun starts to set,” says EA. “By day, Palm City hosts the Speedhunter Showdown, a sanctioned competition where you earn Bank to customize and upgrade your high-performance cars. At night, ramp up the intensity in illicit street races that build your reputation, getting you access to bigger races and better parts. But stay ready – cops are waiting and not all of them play fair.”
To be honest, it’s a fairly awful trailer which doesn’t tell us a great deal. although there is a tiny smidgen of gameplay tucked in at the end which certainly looks very promising.
Need For Speed Heat is a soft reboot (of sorts) yet again, attempting to shed the disaster that was Need For Speed Payback. It’s open-world, Ghost Games are promising a darker story, and there’ll be challenges, races and speed list assignments littered through its world, calling to mind the older Criterion Need For Speeds with its non-linear progression systems.
According to the leaks (and the trailer, from the looks of it), we’ll have a female protagonist who’s ex-police. The leaks claim classic Need For Speed cop chases are back in free roam, including various heat levels and helicopters. Speed Cards (Payback’s microtransactions) are no more, and NFS Heat is also not always-online.
Car customisation will also be key. “We’re delivering more options than ever before for players to be unique and make themselves known,” said Riley Cooper, creative director at Ghost Games. “Our fans have been clear that they want more cars, more customization, and more challenges, and we’re tuning up on every aspect. From your character’s style to your car’s performance and your driving style, we’re fuelling everyone’s creativity with this new game.”
We’re expecting plenty more details when Heat’s gameplay trailer debuts at Gamescom in 5 days’ time on Monday, August 19th.
Need For Speed Heat comes to PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on November 8th. You’ll be able to play the racer from November 5th if you’re an Origin Access Premier subscriber.
