Remedy’s Control has arrived today, arguably setting a new benchmark for PC graphics tech. It’s the sort eyeball massaging we haven’t seen since the Crysis days. But, such graphical fidelity doesn’t come without a prohibitive performance cost. Control is a very demanding PC game and will require high-end graphics hardware in order to run smoothly. In particular, you will need a top-end GPU to play Control at high resolutions.

To help take away some of the question marks you may have over your expected performance in Remedy’s action-packed third-person shooter Control, we have assimilated data based on our benchmarks, performance reports, and user-submitted benchmarks for Control.

This provides a guide to what sort of performance you can expect in Control depending on your graphics card. There are external variables such as CPU to account for, but these benchmark results are assuming the graphics card is the bottleneck.

All of these benchmark results have been recorded while ray tracing features are turned OFF.

Control benchmarks are available for 1080p, 1440p and 4K resolutions across the range of GPUs from the previous three graphics card generations from AMD and Nvida. There are two red vertical lines for each bar that indicate 30 frames per second and 60 frames per second. If a graphics card scores below 30fps in a benchmark it’ll be red, if it’s between 30 and 60 it’s yellow, and anything 60 frames per second or higher is green.

All of this data is also viewable on Control’s game page, as well as on an array of other AAA PC titles.

Unsurprisingly, the graphics cards end up in exactly the sort of order you’d expect them to. Nvidia’s latest and greatest sit at the top of the perch across all tested resolutions in Control benchmarks, while AMD’s latest Radeon RX 5700 series finds itself wedged in just beneath the GeForce RTX 1080 Ti.

Suffice to say, Control is a heck of a demanding beast at 4K resolution. Even the mighty GeForce RTX 2080 Ti struggles on 4K/High, let alone with ray-tracing enabled. A few sacrifices are going to need to be made here and we’d suggest all but the highest-end users target anything other than 1440p or 1080p screen resolution.

At these lower resolutions we see more respectable frame rates, although 60 frames per second is still hard to achieve even for some decent mid-range GPUs. There’s a hefty performance difference between High and Medium in Control, so you can squeeze plenty of additional frames if you take the graphical hit.
