Just as we were hoping for after last week’s tease, Gearbox and Blackbird Interactive have taken the wraps off Homeworld 3, the first numbered new outing in the acclaimed 3D space-based RTS since Homeworld 2 blasted off 16 years ago.

Homeworld 3 appears to be a faithful return for the series, returning to its strategy routes with epic-scale space battles and an involving story-based single-player campaign.

“Homeworld 3 is the last word in epic space combat” says Rob Cunningham, CEO of Blackbird Interactive. “It will capture the mood and tone of Homeworld and deliver it in an exactly expected and juicy, lovely way. There will be an extension of the story that’s totally satisfying with some interesting twists and turns, and locations that I think will blow some minds and resonate with existing fans and new fans alike.”

If Homeworld 3 ends up looking anywhere near as gorgeous as the announcement trailer then we’re certainly in for a feast for the eyes as well. There have been many pretenders to the space RTS crown but strategy across three axis has always proven a notoriously difficult hurdle to overcome.

And now for the bad news. Brace yourselves: Gearbox has said Blackbird is aiming for a Q4 2022 release for Homeworld 3. That’s over three years away!!! Still, it should be comfortably out before Star Citizen so there is that. There’s also a FIG crowd-funding campaign which will run through to September 30th. Homeworld 3 hit its target goal within just a single day but if you feel the Borderlands developer (45 million copies sold) needs a helping hand funding game development then you can do so here.
