LG partners with Nvidia for some insane 4K OLED G-Sync HDR 120Hz TVs
LG has teamed up with Nvidia for what could well end up being the ultimate series of gaming televisions. The 2019 OLED TV models from LG (model 65/55E9, model 77/65/55C9) will be updated with support for Nvidia’s G-Sync variable refresh rate technology.
OLED TVs already offered the most vivid image quality around, while these particular models from LG are geared towards low input and ultra-fast response times. The LG 4K G-Sync TVs will range from 55” up to a mammoth 77 inches.
The switch to 4K and HDR these past few years has inherently introduced some display latency and input lag. Even these monstrous TVs can’t quite match the responsiveness of a top-end 1080p display but LG are claiming a response time of 6ms when viewing 1440p content at 120Hz and 13 milliseconds for 4K content at 60Hz. That seems a lot compared to some PC gaming monitors but cheaper 4K HDR TVs can have input lag and response times up in the 60-80ms region.
LG’s 2019 OLED TVs will also have HDR10 and Dolby Vision support for displaying HDR content, as well as Dolby Atmos audio and Dolby TrueHD lossless sound technology.
“We are excited to bring G-Sync Compatible support to LG’s 2019 OLED TVs and HDMI Variable Refresh Rate support to our GeForce RTX 20-Series GPUs,” said Matt Wuebbling, head of GeForce marketing at NVIDIA. “Gamers will be blown away by the responsiveness and the lifelike visuals on these TVs when playing the latest PC games featuring real-time ray-tracing powered by GeForce.”
“It’s no secret LG OLED TVs are coveted by gamers world over and we are committed to optimizing the OLED gaming experience for them,” Sam Kim, senior vice president of the TV product planning division of Home Entertainment company at LG. “With NVIDIA G-SYNC adoption, we are showing that OLED TVs have the support and backing of the world’s top gaming hardware brand to make their products look their best.”
To my mind, these LG tellies are some of the best options out there now for those who want to drag their PC into the living room for some couch going. It’s all fantastically overkill for console gamers but for those with a high-end PC who can benefit from the high refresh rates this should be a dream.
However, if you’re expecting anything close to a bargain then you’re flat out of luck. OLED TVs still carry a hefty price premium, as do G-Sync displays. Combine the two into a giant 4K, OLED G-Sync display and we’re talking around £3000 here in the UK for the LG OLED65E9PLA 65″ 4K OLED TV. The larger 77” LG OLED77C9PLA (last year’s model) will set you back at least £7000. The absolute cheapest we can find is the LG 55E9 which would set you back £2000. Yep, we told you these things were pricey.
We’ve got a long to go until TV sets begin to enter the range of affordable for most, but we’re in for a treat when they do.
Nvidia G-Sync support will roll out to LG 2019 OLED TVs via firmware update in the coming weeks.
