Discord has killed its Nitro Games service, no longer going to sell any games
Discord has just put the final nail in the coffin of its short-lived game storefront. As of October, all games contracted to appear in the Nitro Games catalogue will not be renewed and will cease to be playable through the service.
The Nitro Games catalogue was an array of games which were playable for Discord Nitro subscribers, bundled in with all sorts of other Discord benefits like higher quality videos, custom tags, and a bigger file upload limit.
“We learned a lot from all of you over the last year,” wrote Discord in candid a blog post. “Through your valuable feedback, it became clear that while we and some of you love these games, the truth is the vast majority of Nitro subscribers didn’t play them. So, after careful consideration, we won’t be hitting Continue when these contracts come up for renewal. Fair enough.
This means the entire Nitro Games catalogue will be removed on October 15th, 2019. If you’re still subscribed, you’ve got one month left to finish any games you may have access to.
It brings to a close what was a disappointing year all round for round for Discord’s prospective ‘Steam competitor’. Discord came flying out of the gates and even offered a hefty 90/10 revenue split but it just hasn’t worked out. The Discord games storefront was shut down in March and now Nitro Games has followed suit six months later.
It’s the big elephant in the room but perhaps chasing a few more exclusivity deals is what sets apart the Discord and Epic stores of the world.
Anyway, with games now of the equation, Discord’s focus is in trying to give more value to Nitro subscribers. This includes higher quality streaming, doubled upload sizes, Server Boost, and Go Live gameplay sharing.
