When I signed up to the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare PC open beta I was a bit weirded out to discover I needed to sign in with a Battle.net account and a COD Account. I didn’t have the latter so I reluctantly made one. It all seemed a bit unnecessary. Looking into Infinity Ward’s plans for a crossplay test it all began to slot into place though.
The COD: Modern Warfare beta test this weekend will be a full cross-play beta. By this, it means PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One players will all be able to play together, regardless of platform.
Here’s how the COD: MW crossplay features will work, as well as how you can expect to benefit from the ambitious new systems at play.
First and foremost, the COD Account is the glue which binds it all together. Using this COD Account you’ll be able to build cross-platform friends lists across PC, PS4, and Xbox One. All you need to do is share your COD Account ID and you’ll be able to play together with your mates, regardless of what platform they’re on. This also means you can have a single COD Account and play across multiple platforms, if you so much.
If you’d rather not cross boundaries and play with other platforms then you can choose to opt in or opt out to Modern Warfare’s cross-play. Once you opt in, matchmaking will then be based on the control method used rather than the platform you’re playing on. The upshot of this, apart from being able to play with your friends on any platform, is that matchmaking should be faster.
PS4 and Xbox One players can choose to use a mouse and keyboard if they wish to. PC players can used a console gamepad. PC, PS4, and Xbox One users can all play together provided they all use the same control scheme. M&KB players can play together and controller users can all play together. Custom lobbies will exist where any control scheme is possible although this obviously creates an imbalance in terms of mouse versus gamepad users.
It’s a neat change, really neat, although we’ll be interested to see how effectively Infinity Ward manages the potential ‘cheats’ trying to fake their control methods.
Looking further afield, IW has also explain that all post-launch content, including new maps, modes, and spec ops missions will be released simultaneously across all platforms. Usually they run a one-month exclusivity deal with the platform which throws the most money Activision’s way but the times they are a-changin’.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s closed beta starts tomorrow, September 19th, while the open beta test is available from Saturday, September 21st to Sunday, September 22nd. It’ll include 2v2 Gunfight, 6v6 Domination, TDM, Headquarters, and 32v32 Ground War modes.
Call of duty Modern Warfare 2019 will be available on PC Windows, Xbox One and PlayStation 4, releasing on October 25th.
