We’ve been dealing with rumours of an Uncharted movie for longer than we care to remember. So long, in fact, that it feels as if the videogame series it’s based on has now drifted out of the public consciousness, replaced by excitement for Ellie’s tale of revenge in The Last of Us Part II. Still, Uncharted always was, and is, a franchise ripe for blockbuster cinema, the sort of popcorn munching pulp fiction which catapulted Indiana Jones to success.
This week we’re seemingly taking one step closer to an Uncharted move becoming reality with reports circulation that Spider-Man actor Tom Holland has been lined up to star as Nathan Drake in a prequel story featuring a young Drake learning his treasure hunting ways from mentor Sully.
Sony Pictures is also now allegedly in talks with Travis Knight as director. Knight has just two directing credits under his belt so far – Kubo and the Two Strings and Bumblebee. The former is fantastic, the latter is a whole lot better than the dirge that passes for Transformers these days. He’s also worked as lead animator on ParaNorman and Coraline, so he’s certainly got some chops.
The Uncharted movie is due to begin production in early 2020 so we’re definitely reaching the point at which the finer details must be nailed down. Charles Rowan and Alex Gartner are producing while Art Marcum, Matt Holloway, and Rafe Judkins are handling scriptwriting duties for Uncharted.
While not explicitly rumoured just yet, we can expect Sony’s priority will be to encourage Naughty Dog to get back onto Uncharted once the The Last of Us 2 ships in February. A new game could work a few wonders in terms of advertising the movie, and vice versa. These things take a great deal of time though, with The Last of Us 2 swallowing up five years of Naughty Dog’s time.
