Call of Duty: Mobile is biggest game launch ever, 100 million downloads and counting
Call of Duty: Mobile has officially enjoyed the best launch of any mobile game ever. It’s not exactly surprising but it we’re still amazed how it even happens.
As of yesterday, COD Mobile has been downloaded more than 100 million times within its launch week. 100. Million. I’m still trying to fathom it. It’s free, which helps a great deal of course, but that’s still a heck of a large number.
For point of comparison, Fortnite managed to achieve 26.3 million in its first week, and PUBG notched up ‘just’ 22.5 million. It certainly makes us wonder how many people would play the ‘proper’ COD releases if they went F2P.
“The response from fans across both Android and iOS has been amazing. Already, Call of Duty: Mobile has surpassed 35 million downloads on its way to becoming the #1 ranked iOS app in downloads overall, not only among games, but also among all apps, in 100 countries,” said Rob Kostich, president, Activision.
“This is an incredibly fun experience, and we’re only getting started. Congratulations to the teams at Activision and at our partner Tencent’s TiMi Studios for making such a great game for players. And special thanks to our fans for their continued support. There is a ton more to look forward to as we release more content and updates.”
The initial success of Call of Duty Mobile appeared to cause a sharp spike in Activision Blizzard’s market value but this swiftly turned into a slide downward following the Blizzard and Hong Kong/China controversy. Still, Activision has managed to pivot from 37m monthly active users across its games to probably well in excess of 120m, all in the span of a week.
Has anyone been brave enough to give Call of Duty a shot on mobile? Did anyone attempt to use GameLoop to play COD: Mobile with a mouse & keyboard? Spill the beans below!
