Rumour: Valve and Apple are teaming up to create an AR headset

This is a strange one considering how long Apple and Valve were at loggerheads while Valve tried to bring the Steam Link app to iOS, but the two American giants have allegedly agreed a partnership to develop an augmented reality headset.

Valve and Apple’s AR Head-Mounted Display (HMD) is reportedly on course to be revealed during the second half of 2020, with a release to follow shortly after. This comes from DigiTimes via MacRumours, so take it with a pinch of salt if you must. It’s a very left-field suggestion though,

Apple has been rumoured to be developing its own AR headset for some time now, while Valve has obviously made significant in-roads into VR through the HTC Vive and its own Valve Index VR headset. In this sense, the two partnering up is a fairly logical manoeuvre.

There are still a lot of questions marks over the mainstream appeal and practicality of AR headsets but there’s going on in this area that eventually someone’s going to crack the market.

However, when we look at the Valve Index and just about anything Apple makes, whatever this AR headset is, it probably isn’t going to be cheap. Think, sell a kidney expensive, that sort of level.

Keep your eyes peeled then because 2020 could shape up to be an interesting year for both Valve and Apple if they’re thinking about diversifying.
