First trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog live-action movie drops, Jim Carrey as Dr Robotnik
Having ignominiously delayed the Sonic the Hedgehog movie following savage fan feedback to the character design, the blue blur has resurfaced in a new trailer.
Now due in 2020, Sonic the Hedgehog’s latest trailer features a drastically redesigned Sonic. hanging out with some generic cop man who decides to protect Sonic when Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) comes a-calling. Robotnik wants to know the secret to Sonic’s superfast speed, and he’ll stop at nothing to get his mitts on it.
Anyway, I shan’t ruin it all, you can check out the redesigned Sonic for yourself in the new trailer below:
It’s better, a whole lot better. Sonic now actually looks pretty much how you’d expect him to in 3D, rather than some gross furry Adam Scott. He still looks factually worse than any real life hedgehog ever but Paramount Pictures and Sega have to take their victories where they can.
Following Sonic’s redesign, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie is now due to hit the big screen on February 14th, 2020.
UPDATE: 03-May-2019 – Sonic the Hedgehog to be redesigned following criticism of first movie trailer
The movie’s already locked in for a November 2019 debut at cinemas across the globe, but Sonic the Hedgehog director Jeff Fowler has now promised Sonic will be redesigned in time for the movie’s launch.
Following some, er, intense fan criticism of how Sonic looks in the movie trailer, Fowler and Paramount Pictures are going to the drawing board with the character’s design.
“Thank you for the support. And the criticism,” wrote Fowler on Twitter. “The message is loud and clear… you aren’t happy with the design & you want changes. It’s going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be…”
They must’ve been aware, surely, that Sonic himself look a terrifying, odd-legged, human-teethed monstrosity. To react to the criticism with a total redesign is almost unprecedented though, and perhaps a worrying sign of the power of outrage culture. One thing’s for sure, the movie animators can kiss goodbye to their free time for the next six months.

After months of teasing, rumours, and cast leaks, it’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for. I’m talking about the first official trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog. Sorry, were you expecting something more momentous?
Ever since we got our first peek at how the blue blur would look in the live-action movie adaptation of Sonic, I think we’ve all been itching to see just how terrifying Paramount Pictures would be going with this. The answer is ‘extremely’. Set this evil on fire and dispose of it down your nearest volcano hole immediately. Seriously. He’s got proper human teeth and looks like when the kid becomes a monkey in Jumanji.
Our CGI rodent friend is being voiced by Ben Schwartz, although Sonic actually looks more like his Parks & Recreation co-star Adam Scott. James Marsden is Sonic’s buddy, Neal McDonough looks like he’s wondering where it all went wrong as he begs for Band of Brothers Season 2, and Jim Carrey, well, Jim Carrey’s Dr Robotnik of course. A slightly unusual-looking Robotnik but he comes good by the end of the trailer.
Right, enough talking, just wraps your eyes around this wild thing. You are unprepared.
From what we can piece together, Sonic has found his way to Earth and Dr. Robotnik is tasked with capturing the spiky prick. Take one look at Sonic and you’ll probably be on Eggman’s side. Anyway, somehow the fate of humanity swings in the balance, and Sonic will naturally be the one to save the day. Right at the end of the trailer, it seems Robotnik manages to find his way into Sonic’s world. Apart from that, who knows anymore.
Thankfully, Sonic the Hedgehog looks as if it’s definitely going to be worth rubbernecking, even if it’s probably not going to buck the trend of videogame movie adaptations. The trailer’s already generating its fair share of hate, although I mentally replaced Sonic with a superhero and it basically looks like a bog-standard Marvel movie. They seem to get a free pass but it looks a similar sort of deal.
Start saving up for the popcorn and hotdogs, Sonic the Hedgehog is due to cinemas in November 2019.
