With Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC now out the door, our attention turns to what Rockstar could be cooking up next. According to jobs posted for Rockstar North, it looks as if production is already ramping up on a next-gen open-world game, presumably the monstrously anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6.
Over on Rockstar’s official website they’re looking for an Animation Systems Programmer who will help to develop advanced animation systems for “large open world character-based games”. Yep, we’ll give you one guess what that game could be.
“We are looking for an experienced, talented engineer to help us in developing advanced animation systems for large open world character-based games,” reads the job listing. “We are a global team of programmers and researchers who collaborate on pushing the boundaries of character animation on next generation hardware.”
Having blown past 100 million copies sold and still raking in hundreds of millions of dollars every year, a sequel to Grand Theft Auto V is beyond obvious. With Red Dead Redemption 2 now largely in the rear view mirror, the focus is going to be solely on what’s up with GTA VI.
What we do now know for sure is Rockstar’s next open-world project will be a next-generation title. That is to say, this game will probably be launching on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Scarlett, along with a PC version (eventually). Rockstar’s never shied away from ambition so we are mighty keen to see just how it intends to expand on GTA V in a meaningful way. Red Dead Redemption 2 has provided an ample demonstration of what can be gained by slowing things down but that’s hardly the GTA way.
For now though, all we’ve got is some fairly vague hiring to go by. Whatever it is could still be an entirely different project, whether that’s Bully 2, Red Dead Redemption 3, or something totally new. The smart money’s on GTA 6 though, as that’s where the real money is. Don’t go expecting to see anything concrete for a good while yet though.
