The team behind the popular OpenIV mod tools for GTA IV and GTA V has confirmed OpenIV support for the PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2.

OpenIV for RDR2 is by no means ready to go live now but the team has already begun cracking open the RPF8 files to find out exactly what’s inside. They’re picking it apart to discover META, XML and PSO files which have the names of all the files and archives enclosed within Red Dead Redemption 2’s install data. At the moment the list is relatively short but the OpenIV team plans to roll out regular updates with a growing list of known file names.

What this means for you, dear gamers, is the eventual arrival of proper mod support for Red Dead Redemption 2’s PC version. Users will be able to get in there, mess with the files, add custom bits, and generally try to bend Red Dead 2 to their whims.

The first version of RDR2’s OpenIV tolls won’t have any editing capabilities but this will all be added in due course. There’s no ETA just yet, either, so we’ll keep our eyes peeled for any updates on this front.

Interestingly, the OpenIV team has said support for Red Dead Redemption 2 is just the start. They say they are “also working on the support for the first Red Dead Redemption.” The original Red Dead Redemption never came to PC, so we can only assume this is the ability to modify either the Xbox 360 or PS3 versions of Red Dead. This second set of tools probably won’t be ready until late 2020 though.
