We’re still 10 months away from consuming the juicy meal that is Cyberpunk 2077, but already CD Projekt RED is teasing us with the dessert menu. The launch is just the beginning for the hyper-ambitious sci-fi RPG. Once we’ve sunk 100 hours into the main campaign, CDPR UI coordinator Alvin Liu said we can expect Witcher 3-style future expansions to build on the game.
“We want to make sure everything’s complete, but we also want to build open worlds,” said Liu during a chat with Prima Games. “I know when I was playing The Witcher 3 and I finished everything, I still want to know what everyone was up to. I think we’re going to have opportunities like that as well for Cyberpunk 2077.”
The Witcher 3: Blood & Wine remains one of just two games I’ve ever given a 10/10 to on this here site. I think it’s quite probably the greatest expansion pack of all time, and certainly worlds apart from the crappy piecemeal DLC we’re often fed these days. It didn’t feel cut from the main game, it felt substantial and meaningful, and it was lavished with the exact same production values as the main game.
It’s a shining example of how to do DLC right, and the fact it cost just $20 is ridiculous in the extreme. To hear that CD Projekt RED has similar plans for Cyberpunk 2077 is music to my ears, and I presume to many others as well.
On that front, Liu moved to assure fans that DLC for CP2077 will be both extensive, and new, and it certainly doesn’t mean that content has been cut from the main game to siphon away into expansion packs. “We’re not withholding content, we’re not withholding story for the future to try to, you know, monetize it or sell it in pieces or anything like that,” continued Liu. “You’re going to get the whole, full value game here.”
2020 is beginning to shape up to be a hell of a year for RPG fans. Cyberpunk 2077 is poised to own the headlines above all the competition though, and it sounds as if we could end up playing this game long after launch.
