Ben Irving, lead producer on Anthem, has taken the first lifeboat out of that sinking ship, announcing he’s leaving BioWare after eight years with the once-venerated RPG developer.
“After 8 amazing years at BioWare I have made the decision to move on and have accepted an exciting opportunity at another gaming company,” wrote Irving in a Twitter announcement. “Since the first time I played Baldur’s Gate many many years ago, BioWare was the dream place I always wanted to work. I will forever be grateful to all the people who gave me the chance to work on great products with amazing people.
“I believe Anthem has a bright future – there is a great team working on it and I look forward to following its progress (and playing it!) from the sidelines. I have really enjoyed interacting with the Anthem community – Streams, Twitter and Reddit. Through the good times and the tough times. You all are in great hands with @Darokaz and @UNTDrew (and have been for some time now). I wish nothing but the best for all of you. Ben.”
It sounds as if Irving has been offered a job at a different developer which proved impossible to resist. We’ve not idea just where yet, although we’d bet he’s eyeing up that Baldur’s Gate 3 gig earnestly.
Despite Irving’s claims Anthem is good hands after his departure, it certainly doesn’t look great for Anthem’s long-term prospects. The sci-fi co-op RPG has suffered a hideous few months since launch and is going to take a herculean effort to salvage. Never say never but it would be immensely surprising if Anthem every actually rises from the ashes. Talent bleed certainly won’t help matters though, particularly when losing a figure as key as lead producer.
