Creative Assembly has not only announced a new Total War Saga game but it’s also released it today. Before you go and get your hopes up though, Total War Saga: Fall of the Samurai is far from a brand new game. In fact, it’s probably a game many of you own already.
Total War Saga: Fall of the Samurai is simply Total War: Shogun II’s standalone Fall of the Samurai expansion. It’s literally the same game, rebranded as a Total War Saga. On the plus side, Fall of the Samurai does now include all released DLC faction packs for Shogun II: Fall of the Samurai, with the exception of the ultra-violent Blood Pack.
Sega and CA’s reasoning behind this is they essentially view Fall of the Samurai as the prototypical Saga game. The inspiration, if you like, to kick on and do these smaller scale, more focused battles.
“Fall of the Samurai has been used as a goalpost to inform the development of subsequent Saga titles, and so it only seems right to give the game its own Saga treatment”, writes Creative Assembly.
“These titles take the grand strategy and real-time battles of a core Total War game and channel them into an intense flashpoint of history, letting you experience and ultimately determine the outcome of pivotal moments in history when the future of entire nations hung in the balance.”
The reality is this is nothing more than a creative method to get Fall of the Samurai back up in people’s faces seven years later, circulating it around as a Total War Saga title. Looking at the Steam IDs, the game has simply replaced Total War: Shogun 2 – Fall of the Samurai’s store page. I can’t really figure out what the point of it all is above and beyond presenting it as a new game. It’s certainly a bit confusing trying to muddle through exactly what’s contained in the packaged.
Still, the good news is, if you’re an existing owner of Shogun II: Fall of the Samurai your copy will have been converted into Total War Saga, Fall of the Samurai, including all DLC faction packs as a free gift.
And, if you don’t, TWS: Fall of the Samurai has arrived with a week-long sale at 75% off the advertised price. Here in the UK, that’s a bit of a bargain at £6.24. It’s set 400 years after the events of Shogun 2 and depicts the clash between traditional Samurai culture with more modern warfare due to the arrival of America, Britain, and France, in Japan.
