Engage the hype thrusters, Nightdive Studios has announced it’s working on an enhanced edition of one of the greatest PC exclusives of all time – System Shock 2.

System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition is now actively in development following what we can only assume was mountains of fan demand. Nightdive opted for a simple tweet for the reveal, saying “You asked for it and we are working on it… System Shock 2 Enhanced Edition coming soon!!!”

Nightdive Studios has made a bit of a name for itself re-releasing games. They’ve give us a version of System Shock 2 that runs fine on modern systems already, as well as remasters of Turok and Turok 2: Seeds of Evil. They also gave us a remaster of System Shock: Classic and are still developing the total remake of the original System Shock. They’re knee-deep in System Shock, basically, and they’ve clearly got a love of affection for this beloved sci-fi horror immersive sim.

And with good reason, too. System Shock 2 was absolutely groundbreaking at the time and was fundamental to pushing forward what we thought was possible in terms of first-person exploration and world-building.

Details are scarce right now, although Nightdive has at least promised we’ll be getting “Working/stable multiplayer for a start!” The original System Shock 2 already runs just fine on modern systems so we’re keen to see what twists and additions they’re going to make, particularly in terms of the visuals.

For the uninitiated, here’s a trailer for the original System Shock 2, which you can currently pick up over on GOG and Steam and wherever the heck you want really.
