Here we go again. Hello Games has dropped the launch trailer for No Man’s Sky Beyond, the massive free update coming to No Man’s Sky next week. After three long years, they’re gearing up for what could well be the most ambitious update yet.
Full-blown multiplayer appears to be alive and well; there are giant mechs to pilot, enhanced space combat, freighters and base building, third-person mode, and virtual reality headset support.
Third-person adventuring was introduced last year, I believe, but the worlds themselves certainly look more alive and vibrant. There are honest-to-goodness players wandering about (often on those crabs), ships coming and going, and even space stations you can meet one another in for a pint of gargleflarter or whatever these space chimps drink. All these social events centre around a ‘Nexus’, a meeting spot of sorts designed to bring players together in what is an incomprehensibly large universe.
I see Sean Murray hasn’t lost his tongue-in-cheek humour, opening the entire trailer with the fib “every atom procedural”. Still, there’s a heck of a lot here that’s changed, although I’m at a bit of a loss what’s being added with this specific update and what’s been added in the years since launch. Crab riding! Crab riding is definitely new, and it looks absolutely mental.
I’ve got to say though, as much I love what they’ve been doing with No Man’s Sky since launch, and they’ve done a ton, I still just cannot bring myself to head back in. The launch product really wasn’t good at all and, as the years roll by, there’s just so much stuff out there that pushes NMS even further from my mind. Still, this is definitely the closest I’ve come to being tempted to give No Man’s Sky a go again, particularly with the prospect of VR support. It’s probably about time I dusted off the VR headset, it’s been a good six months since I’ve last tried it.
No Man’s Sky Beyond is a free update coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One on August 14th.
