Ok I’ve been ignoring this daft rumour for days and days but some seemingly reputable sites have begun staking their repute on its veracity, so here we go – Bully 2 is in development at Rockstar, it’s been in development a long time, and it will be launching in 2020 in time for the next-gen consoles.
Look, I told you it was daft. Honestly, I wouldn’t put much faith in this at all. It’s been less than a year since Rockstar went all hands on deck for Red Dead Redemption 2’s launch, so the idea they could trot out a new game by next year seems a bit ludicrous. It’s also been six years since GTA V launched and a sequel has to be the top priority. Bully was a hit, but one nowhere near the scale of Rockstar’s other IPs.
Onwards to the rumours and leaks themselves then, which the likes of Polygon and GamesRadar have all partially staked their reputation on. There is a web of rumours, beginning with Polygon. They claimed a new easter egg has been discovered in GTA Online’s Casino update. It’s a piece of artwork used which contains four quadrants and four symbols, pained by Matthew Morse. They’ve then translated the image into Morse code by assuming the red splodges are dots and the yellow scribbles are dashes. It reads “4NAD”. Nope, I’ve no idea either. Polygon then injected their own bully-sequel-announced-fall-2020-news-embargoed-do-not-publish’ URL into the article as a deliberate prank, but this was then taken as further evidence of the existence of Bully 2.
Okay, keeping up? Good, because that was a load of old gobbledegook that has somehow spawned a wave of further investigations this week. Now we arrive at YouTube channel SWEGTA (alarm bells should be ringing here), a YouTube channel pretty much dedicated to Bully. They claim inside sources have confirmed Bully 2 is being developed for next-gen consoles and is targeting a 2020 launch. ComicBook.com has then come along and corroborated. It’s probably not a corroboration worth the pixels it’s printed on, to be honest, but they also claim their ‘Rockstar Games insider’ sources have backed up the claims. Ahem.
If all that wasn’t enough for you (and it probably shouldn’t be), self-proclaimed ‘former Rockstar games insider’ @Yann2295 said “As I said on GTAForums yesterday, Bully 2 is in development and is supposed to be the next R* game after RDR 2.” I don’t know who he is or how reliable he is but he’s managed to rack up 62.6K Twitter followers with his inside scoops.
So there it is, a whole heap of rumours, hearsay, conjecture, and guesswork, and not a definitive confirmation of Bully 2 in sight. You’ll have to make your own mind up on this one, although this is certainly a rumour I’d file firmly into the ‘bull(y)shit’ category. Taking a punt, I’d say bolstering GTA Online and Red Dead Online’s content is a top priority, followed swiftly by Grand Theft Auto 6. That’s where the money is, and if there’s one thing we know Rockstar likes its money (and tax avoidance).
