Ubisoft is practically unequaled in the AAA space for doing good by its games long, long after launch, proving the point with yet another huge free update for Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands just two months before Ghost Recon Breakpoint is due to drop.

The latest updated for GR: Wildlands adds an all-new Mercenaries game mode that sounds very intriguing indeed. Mercenaries is essentially a riff on small-scale battle royale and Hunt: Showdown-style PvPvE gameplay. Eight players are dropped into the world in a free-for-all scramble to complete objectives and extract from the zone.

The remit is pretty simple, following a three-phase approach to matches. In Phase 1: Recon, players begin with no long-range weapons, gear, or items. They need to locate radio transmitters in order to shrink the size of the potential extraction zone. Radios are discovered through intel, and this intel can also provide information on the locations of other players, rare gear, and vehicles.

Once three radio transmitters have been activated, a helicopter will be called into the extraction point. Once it lands, its location will be revealed to all players which are still alive. Once a player gets to the extraction point, they need to hang within a specified area to fill the gauge and extract. There’s clearly a lot of The Division’s ‘Dark Zone’ DNA to Wildlands’ Mercenaries mode, and Ubisoft is probably using this as a testbed to hone multiplayer in Ghost Recon Breakpoint.

Ghost Recon Wildlands: Mercenaries free update is out today, July 18th.

Anyone playing to give Wildlands one last hurrah before Breakpoint drops?
