Doom fans, I come bearing terrible news. The eagerly anticipated Doom Eternal has been delayed. Originally scheduled to launch on November 22nd, Doom Eternal has now been pushed back all the way to March 20th, 2020.
As ever with these things, the official line is this is a necessary step to allow Doom Eternal to become the base game it can possible be.
“Throughout the development of DOOM Eternal, our goal has been to deliver a game that exceeds your greatest expectations across the board,” writes Id Software.
“To make sure we’re delivering the best experience — for DOOM Eternal to live up to our standards of speed and polish — we’ve made the decision to extend our launch date by a few months to March 20, 2020. We know many fans will be disappointed by this delay, but we are confident that DOOM Eternal will deliver a gaming experience that is worth the wait.”
Just to soften the blow somewhat, Id Software has thrown in a few extras. The Invasion Mode will allow players to enter other player’s game as a demon.
The recently announced Doom 64 is also now being thrown in as a pre-order bonus on all platforms. Simply pre-order Doom Eternal and you’ll get yourself a copy of Doom 64 on March 20th, 2020. It’s a bit of a shame they can’t get it out there sooner, to be honest, to give Doom fans something to chew on during the delay.
And lastly, some fairly brutal news for Doom-nuts on Nintendo Switch. Not only has the Switch version of Doom Eternal also been delayed, obviously, but it’s now going to launch after the other platforms. That’s a hell of a wait.
I have to say it’s a case of out of the frying pan and into the hell-fire as a result of this delay. November was looking fiercely packed with the likes of Red Dead Redemption 2, Death Stranding, Shenmue 3, Planet Zoo, Need For Speed Heat, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and Pokemon, so it makes sense for Doom Eternal to dodge this rush. However, it’s now launching within a matter of weeks of Watch Dogs Legion, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Animal Crossing, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, and Cyberpunk 2077. Doom Eternal can’t seem to catch a break.
This also raises big questions over Google Stadia’s launch. Google hasn’t announced a firm release date for its streaming service outside of ‘November 2019’ but Doom Eternal was the cornerstone of its Stadia demos. With that off the table, Google Stadia’s launch is looking even more tepid.
Anyway, following the delay, Doom Eternal will launch on March 20th, 2020, for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia.
