Google Stadia’s roster of talent is continuing to grow behind the scenes, even if we can’t actually tell what the heck they’re all up to from a front-face perspective. They’ve now been joined by Alen Ladavec, one of the co-founders of Croteam, a Croatian studio which can count the Serious Sam and The Talos Principle series among its roster of beloved titles.
Ladavec founded Croteam alongside Davor Hunski, Roman Ribarić, Dean Sekulić, Davor Tomičić, and Admir Elezović, all the way back in 1993. They were originally developing games for the Amiga 500 but really made a name for themselves with the arrival of Serious Sam: The First Encounter in 2001, a game which even then felt retro-inspired in the face of Halo, Max Payne, and Operation Flashpoint.
“We’ve made many respected titles, from Football Glory back in 1993, through the legendary Serious Sam franchise, and the one dearest to my heart: The Talos Principle,” wrote Ladavac. “It’s been fantastic 25 years and I couldn’t be more proud of everything we’ve achieved.”
Croteam is currently working on both Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass and The Talos Principle 2, albeit without the help of Ladavec. He’s joining Google Stadia as an engineering manager, working with Google on bringing cloud gaming to the masses.
“I’m super excited to announce that I’m starting at Google München, joining the awesome Stadia team to work on finally bringing gaming into the cloud,” wrote Ladavac on LinkedIn. “What was once deemed impossible, now is the reality – and I’m grateful for a chance to contribute to this landmark undertaking.”
Between Phil Harrison, Jade Raymond, and now Adam Ladavec, Google is putting together a semblance of a top team at Stadia. It feels like what really needs to happen now is for Google’s own gaming studio, Stadia Games and Entertainment, to get out there and announce some games which are only feasible with the cloud infrastructure. Without that, it’s just one other way to play Borderlands 3.
