It was a bittersweet evening for Call of Duty fans yesterday evening as Activision dropped the first single-player campaign trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare while, in the same breath, confirming Modern Warfare’s co-operative Spec Ops Survival mode will be exclusive to PS4 players for an entire year.

We’ll start with the good news, which was COD: MW’s Story Trailer. The narrative through-line seems a bit of a mess at this point but it’s all a setup to allow Infinity Ward to provide a globe-trotting campaign with a diverse set of protagonists and situations.

And, well, it’s been a long time since we’ve said this about a COD campaign, but it looks as if this could be fantastic. We’re back to genuine grit here, with chemical warfare, Middle Eastern rebel forces, and some thoroughly awesome use of night vision.

But, onward and downwards, and the news that the Survival mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s Spec Ops will be PlayStation 4 exclusive until October 2020. That’s, er, around the same time as the next Call of Duty will be ready to launch. That’s an egregious move which will ruffle the feathers of PC and Xbox One players, no matter how throwaway the mode ends up being.

It’s still unclear exactly what the Special Ops Survival mode is but we do know Spec Ops standard will be a co-operative game mode which adds new missions which tie into COD: Modern Warfare’s story somehow. Survival could end up being a load of trash but the bottom line is Sony has fronted up a nice wedge of cash for an exclusivity deal and players on other platforms are missing out.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare comes to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on October 25th.
