Rockstar has stepped into the already competitive market of space on your desktop, announcing the Rockstar Games Launcher. Yep, it’s an other launcher to join the ranks alongside Steam, GOG Galaxy, Uplay, Origin, Battle.net, Bethesda, Itch, Xbox Store, and the Epic Games Store. A nice round ‘10’ applications if you want to have access to the entire weird and wonderful world of PC gaming.
The Rockstar Games Launcher is available right now and it’s a desktop application which will, for now, exclusively house the entire Rockstar Games PC collection. That means all the GTA titles, Bully, Max Payne, LA Noire, and a handful more. It’s not exactly a heaving library but clearly Rockstar is a bet fed up of sharing its earnings with the likes of Valve.
Rockstar have managed to outdo Epic and launch with full cloud save functionality for its library of titles, as well as the ability to deliver the latest news on these games directly to its users.
Just to sweeten the deal somewhat, if you install the Rockstar Games Launcher you will be able to claim a free copy of the stone-cold classic that is Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on PC. Yes, that’s great for you, the only person on the planet who somehow doesn’t own a copy of San Andreas. Congratulations, and welcome to a life of crime.
Another PC gaming client then, which is a bit of a pain in the arse. It’s not all bad news though because the timing of this absolutely will be intentional. You don’t release a launcher without a game or two to entice people over to using it. This is pretty much the strongest confirmation yet that Red Dead Redemption 2 for PC is going to be announced shortly. This ties in very nicely with Rockstar attempting to get a project codenamed ‘Bonaire’ rated for release in Australia, as well as Rockstar pulling all of its games from GeForce Now. You can practically lock it in for a launch within in the next six months, so much this space. Now how about a Red Dead Redemption remaster just to sweeten the deal?
The one elephant in the room is the potential for exclusivity. Once Red Dead Redemption 2 is announced for PC, we’d be very surprised if Rockstar’s Western epic isn’t exclusive to the Rockstar Games Launcher. A small price to pay for one of the greatest stories in gaming, we believe.
Getting on my tinfoil hat for a moment, I’d stake a pretty solid claim on RDR2 on PC launching in November. We still don’t have a release date for Google Stadia other than ‘November’, and Google have said it hasn’t shared a specific release date because we’ll “have to wait to see why.” Rockstar is partnered with Google Stadia and has no games announced; releasing RDR2 simultaneously on PC and Stadia launch day seems like a solid move.
