Bandai Namco has shared the second trailer for Tales of Arise, its ambitious new outing from the long-running JRPG franchise. Showcases at Tokyo Game Show, the Tales of Arise ‘A Fateful Encounter’ trailer showcases a few mysterious cinematics alongside some very slick combo-based action gameplay.
“A man numb to pain, and a woman whose very touch deals nothing but…pain. How will the story unfold between Alphen and Shionne?” says Bandai Namco, detailing a plot which is already sounding eerily similar to Ichi the Killer. They’re trying to refresh the franchise in an effort to appeal to a Western audience, offering up a darker aesthetic that’s less about the body pillows and more about epic fantasy.
Tales of Arise is the first game in the series to use Unreal Engine 4 and it absolutely shows; it’s been a long time since you could argue a Tales game actually looks visually great. One really nice touch is when the grass chars around the protagonist when he unleashes a special sword move, creating an epic flaming battlefield in an instant. It’s night and day compared to 2017’s Tales of Berseria.
Bandai Namco is currently shooting for a 2020 launch for Tales of Arise, when it’ll be arriving on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
