Battlefield V’s trials and tribulations continue to go from bad to worse as DICE confirms development of the 5 v 5 competitive mode has been cancelled. DICE has been bigging up the new mode for the best part of year, planning to use the new mode to spearhead some form of eSports initiative for the Battlefield franchise.
Now though, Ryan McArthur, senior producer on Battlefield V, has said the new competitive game mode has been scrapped as DICE looks to focus on the core issues and content which players are crying out for.
“The focus on improving the quality of the Battlefield V experience and adding more of the content you want has led us to step back from our original plans to offer a competitive 5v5 mode. Not creating this mode was a tough decision, but vital for us to more quickly reach our bug-crushing and content goals,” wrote McArthur.
“However, we will still pursue building a competitive gaming experience in Battlefield. We know that there’s already an existing competitive scene in our community, and we’re helping build features to support these communities. We want to work more closely with our players to help improve the tools that they have available to shape their play experience. This way, we can better support the places where competitive Battlefield V play already exists.”
It comes after DICE pushed out a survey on Reddit asking fans what they like about BFV and what they’d like to see changed. I took the survey and the answers seemed mind-blowingly obvious – stop bothering with any development of co-op Combined Arms, fix the bugs, and add maps, glorious maps. It’s not exactly rocket science to figure out what fans are crying out for.
Thankfully, change does at least appear to be on the horizon. The completely broken Al Sundan map should be ready for Conquest at some point in September, while a couple of new smaller maps are about to arrive for Squad Conquest and Team Deathmatch. Then, with update 4.6 in September, Operation Underground will re-imagine Operation Metro with support for Conquest, TDM, Breakthrough, and Squad Conquests. After this, it’s time for the Pacific theatre of war. BF 1942’s legendary Iwo Jima map is already confirmed, with two more Pacific maps yet to be revealed.
A rocky few months for BFV then, which was to be expected after a rocky year. DICE is going to have to get its ducks in a row fast though. We’re now just a handful of weeks away from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s launch and its 100+ player battles are clearly being designed to pull over hardened Battlefield players.
