We knew Sega was gearing up for a major AAA announcement at Gamescom and now we know exactly what is – Humankind is the monstrously ambitious new 4X strategy title from Amplitude Studios, the outfit behind the sumptuous Endless Space and Legend franchises.

Humankind is a grand 4X strategy game charting the entire history of humanity. Starting from the Bronze Age, players can re-write the narrative, rebuilding culture, history, and values through the ages, right on through to the modern-day. In a unique twist, players build their own unique civilization by coming 60 historical cultures, culminating on over one million unique civilizations.

Battles take the form of turn-based tactics, including terrain elevation advantages, offering up to eight-way warfare. Choose the high ground to build your city atop and it will become harder to lay siege to, or drop your archers into the woods to give them the advantage over incoming mounted troops.

“Amplitude Studios was founded with the intention of creating this game, all the games we’ve created up until now have been leading up to this moment,” said Romain de Waubert, CCO at Amplitude. “We are so excited to finally be able to share with the community what has been at the heart of Amplitude since day one.”

It’s gorgeous, no doubt about it, and it’s definitely the sort of game which looks as if it could give Civilization a run for its money. There’s still a whole lot we don’t know but the earlier signs are definitely promising.

Sega has said we can expect to see Humankind come to PC at some point in 2020.
