Netflix renews The Witcher series for a second season, production begins early 2020

While we’re all sat here impatiently twiddling our thumbs and waiting for The Witcher to come to Netflix, the streaming giant has put its money where its mouth is and renewed the show for a second series already.

In a post on Twitter, Netflix US said “Geralt’s adventure is only beginning… The Witcher has been renewed for Season 2!” along with an accompanying image of Geralt of Rivia’s two swords – one steel, one silver, for slaying humans and monsters respectively.

Production of Season 2 is due to begin early next year in London, with the second 8-episode run expect to debut on Netflix at some point in 2021.

Series 1 of The Witcher is scheduled to hit Netflix on December 20th, starring  Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, and Freya Allan as Ciri. The initial run will be for eight episodes, although it’s unclear if Netflix will target a longer format approach going forward should Series 1 become a roaring success.

From the outset it would appear Netflix is banking on this becoming its Game of Thrones. That’s one heck of a tall order but The Witcher already has a solid fan base and the trailers we’ve seen so far show some degree of promise. It’s betting big with this Season 2 commitment, that’s for sure, which at least indicates to us that Season 1 of The Witcher is being well received internally and during test screenings.

The Witcher Series 1 will premiere on Netflix next month, on December 20th, 2019.
