This is probably going to sound hideous to some folks but there’s a fairly substantial rumour doing the rounds that Blizzard was working on Diablo 2 Remastered, and that this remaster has been cancelled.
It all stems from a Reddit post which surfaced on the Diablo subreddit some four months ago. The post is all the usual rumour-mongering and inside scoops which, ordinarily, wouldn’t be that believable. However, the leaker absolutely nailed the details of Diablo IV, four months before the game was officially announced.
The Diablo 4 leaker said the game’s official title would be Diablo IV; it would be an isometric MMORPG with no load times, a sophisticated new game engine, a much darker art style, they nailed the barbarian and druid classes, as well as hub cities and the revamped combat system with combos. Basically, it looks as if this person absolutely did see a 20-minute demo of Diablo IV before it was made public, which lends credence to their next claim.
“Diablo II Remake/Remaster was planned, but they later realized that it would be much better to give the franchise a complete reset and put [the] majority of the fans’ requests into 1 giant package,” wrote u/Gorelight on Reddit.
We’ve known for some time now that Blizzard has been hiring for potentially multiple Diablo projects, stretching all the way back to early 2017. In June 2017, Blizzard was looking for a UI/UX Visual Designer, in particular “a renaissance designer to harmonize that which was, with that which will be. Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo await your machinations. If you have the desire to rise to that challenge, we’d love to hear from you.” Warcraft 3: Reforged was eventually announced, of course, but it appears any plans for a Diablo 2 remaster have been shelved with the arrival of Diablo 4. On the subject of StarCraft, well, that’s a franchise put out to pasture if ever we’ve seen one.
