It’s been the world’s worst kept secret but Diablo 4 was finally announced on Friday evening. We’ve been hanging on for a sequel for more than seven years now, and if Blizzard was aiming to find a way to quell any potential BlizzCon protests, dropping a stunning gameplay trailer for Diablo 4 was a surefire way to do it.
Diablo IV will feature a massive open-world map with five contiguous regions, full day/night cycles, a non-linear story campaign, five playable classes (barbarian, sorceress and druid have been confirmed so far), and a pool of ‘hundreds’ of randomised dungeons to dive into. The entirety of Diablo 4 will be online, with PvP ones littered about for those who want to test their mettle.
Blizzard dropped both a lengthy cinematic trailer and the first gameplay trailer for us to pore over. Diablo 4 is set after the events of Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls and Lilith, the daughter of Mephisto, is set loose from prison.
Blizzard has confirmed Diablo 4 will be online only, much the same as Diablo III. Players will be able to play solo, head into private dungeons, and take on campaign quests, but all of it will require an internet connection in order to work.
As for a release date, we’ve probably still got a long wait on our hands. Blizzard has said Diablo 4 isn’t going to be ready any time soon, “even by Blizzard’s standards of soon.”

“When I don’t have internet for a few days, cause my provider needs to get me a new router, playing a game sounds really good. I can’t though cause internet is required to first time start up the game…I Already Did That!”

“Just another always online, soulless, grindfest, mmo-like AAA game.I just don’t get why it is so hard to for them to make story-driven, singleplayer games with optional multiplayer mode, to play with ONLY my friends like they used to.”

“Despite all the hate this game is getting I’m looking forward to play it. If D4 is as good as D3 I’ll buy the game on release and all future DLCs. Diablo was always about the atmosphere and no POE is gonna beat that.”
