It’s a matter of huge debate these days whether the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be littered with loot boxes but an Infinity Ward employee has attempted to quash these rumours once and for all.
Joel Emslie, Infinity Ward’s art director on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, has come out all guns blazing on Reddit and said there are no supply drops, no loot boxes, or anything of the sort really. He’s said Infinity ward has not been working on it and there are no plans to add such a system.
“Sigh,” began a weary Emslie. “There continues to be misinformed and incorrect info being pushed about Modern Warfare. What I can say right now is that we are definitely NOT working on any kind of supply drop or loot box system. Also, functional stuff is unlocked through GAMEPLAY. Stay tuned, we’re planning to release info this week.”
This all comes after beta players unearthed mentions of supply drops in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, while there were also reports the supply drops would include cosmetics such as emotes, sprays, skins, and the big one – all-new weapons. This is something which Emslie is now categorically denying.
It’s at this moment that we’d like you to cast your mind back to February of this year, some four months or so after Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 launched. Having launched without loot boxes, Supply Drops were added to COD: BLOPS 4 in February 2019, and fans were not happy at all.
So, er, put a pin in this one because we’ll probably be able to circle around to this in a few month’s time. To put it bluntly, we’d be supremely taken aback if loot boxes aren’t added to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, especially when we consider all post-launch maps and modes are free this time. That content’s going to need to be funded any way Activision can get its mitts on. At the moment we’d guess the income is going to come from fixed-priced cosmetics and battle passes, although this could all undoubtedly change at a moment’s notice once the bean counters get stuck in.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare comes to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on October 25th.
