Rhythm FPS Metal: Hellsinger Unveils New Gameplay Video
Publisher Funcom and developer The Outsiders today revealed a new gameplay video for rhythm FPS Metal: Hellsinger that introduces a crushing new progressive metal track to which players will slay demons next year.
Shown during the 2020 edition of the Golden Joystick Awards, Metal: Hellsinger’s latest video blends gameplay footage that further cements it as the loud, violent spawn of Doom and Guitar Hero with studio footage of prog death metal group Black Crown Initiate’s James Dorton performing the in-game progressive metal track Purity of Fire.
Written by Swedish composers Elvira Björkman and Nicklas Hjertberg, the song feeds perfectly into the game’s distinctive approach to first-person shooting in which killing enemies to the rhythm of the music boost both its intensity but also your character’s power.
Metal: Hellsinger New Gameplay Video and Progressive Metal Track
“The developers have taken great care to make the music as central a part of the game as the action and have therefore created a whole new way of designing in-game music.” reads an emailed press release.
“Every level has its own song, and every song is divided into multiple layers, ranging from atmospheric background tunes to powerful metal anthems. Your performance determines how many layers of the song will be played, with the vocals kicking in as you peak.”
Although metal music and rhythm elements play a large role in what makes Metal: Hellsinger stand out, the team behind it believes that it “stands firmly on its own two feet as shooter,” and that “you don’t have to be a metal fan to enjoy this game.”
You’ll journey through Hell’s many domains as protagonists The Unknown, a part-human, part-demon creature whose quest for vengeance sees him slashing through and blasting apart countless demons on his way to confronting The Red Judge.
Players get to wield a skull-clad blade and an arsenal of guns that range from pistols to shotguns and beyond. Some of the guns also don skull ornaments, which would have otherwise been an unforgivable oversight.
Alongside James Dorton, names like Trivium’s Matt Heafy, Dark Tranquility’s Mikael Stanne, Soilwork’s Björn Strid, and Arch Enemy’s Alissa White-Gluz will also contribute vocals to the game’s soundtrack.
Metal: Hellsinger is set to release in 2021 and headed to PC, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4.
