We’re knee-deep in new Hitman 2 content these days but IO Interactive has its eyes a little further afield. The now-indie Danish video game developer has heavily hinted a third Hitman game is on the way; Hitman 3 will form the finale to a trilogy in the ‘World of Assassination’.
Speaking to NoClip’s Danny O’Dwyer, IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak said “Hitman is a trilogy. There’s a bright future – there’s this full realization of the whole World of Assassination that we’re looking towards as well. The World of Assassination, when that’s complete, it’s going to be one game with all the locations starting from Paris in Hitman to the last location in Hitman 3.”
IO Interactive’s split from Square Enix, its reformation as an indie studio, and the apparently tepid sales of Hitman 2 don’t appear to have dented the prospects of the iconic series. Hitman 2 was fantastic, to be honest, and probably the best in the series yet, but there’s still the lingering blowback from the episodic approach which IO can’t seem to shake. Hitman 2 launched as a complete game but still, this wasn’t enough for some. Credit to IO Interactive for forging on regardless though, as time will assuredly see these games recognised as the greats they are.
It’s not all Hitman for IO though. Abrak also hinted new IPs the studio is working on. “The majority of the studio, at least here in Copenhagen, is working on something secret, and rather excitingly, something new,” said O’Dwyer.
“We are still very much independent. We are looking into the future with new things, potentially new IPs that we might be working on,” chimed in Abrak.
Back to all things Hitman though, and Hitman 2 continues to get updated with a heap of post-launch goodies. We’ve all done prison breaks but now it’s time for a prison break-in. Agent 47 himself won’t be going in though, but his high calibre bullets will be breaking and entering some soft tissue.
Hitman 2’s next post-launch mission takes Agent 47 to the harsh climes of Siberia, to a prison in which he must eliminate a pair of targets while manipulating a prison riot to cover up his naughtiness. It’s one of those new-fangled sniper maps so it’s all long-range, although these maps tend to get made into full-blown levels further down the line.
Hitman 2’s The Prison map will be available to expansion pass owners from today. It’s not available as an individual purchase so it’s season pass or bust.
