We already know the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is going to feature full cross-platform multiplayer across PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, but we haven’t known up until now just how Infinity Ward plans to tackle the gamepad / mouse& keyboard divide.
As it turns out, players will be able to use either a controller or a mouse and keyboard regardless of what platform they’re playing on. Infinity Ward design director, Joe Cecot, confirmed the PlayStation blog that PS4 players are free to use a mouse and keyboard if they wish.
“We’re also supporting different peripherals, so if you want to plug a keyboard [and mouse] into your PS4, you can,” said Cecot.
This sounds like a balancing nightmare but Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will actually utilise peripheral-based matchmaking. To the best of our knowledge, this is an industry-first which could pave the way for future matchmaking standards.
The way it’ll work is pretty simple. If you’re using a mouse and keyboard, regardless of platform, it will matchmake you with other mouse and keyboard players. If you’re using a console gamepad, it’ll match you with other gamepad users. This includes PC players as well, so if you connect an Xbox One controller to your PC you won’t have to face mouse & keyboard users.
The catch is you cannot change input methods after you begin matchmaking, preventing players from loading into a game using a controller and then switching to mouse & keyboard.
I think this all sounds pretty awesome, to be honest, and it could prove really helpful in tempting console users over to PC. One of the big sticking points when moving to PC for those used to gamepads is having to line up against uber accurate mouse users. Being separated into your own servers is a great touch, particularly for us lazy bums who struggle to get off the couch. It means everyone is on a level playing field, and yet everyone can also play with one another if they wish.
As an aside, this should also help with boosting the long-term community of PC players. Call of Duty games tend to fade fast on PC these days, but if you’ve got console players using mice they’ll boost the player count, or you can just plug in a controller and play with all the console folks.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One on October 25th. Ahead of then, there are several beta tests, kicking off on PS4 from September 12th. You can find the full details on the multiplayer beta test here.
