It’s a wet and windy weekend here in the UK and it increasingly sounds as if Ghost Recon Breakpoint is about as lethal as a fart in a wind tunnel, so plenty of folks will undoubtedly be looking elsewhere for their gaming fix. Help may be at hand from Square Enix and the folks at Bulkhead Interactive, whose World War 2 shooter Battalion 1944 is free-to-play this weekend.
From now through until Monday, you can download Battalion 1944 and its Eastern Front expansion in its entirety. It’s very much old-school Call of Duty in its design, offering fast-paced 5v5 combat with quick time-to-kill and a beautiful reliance on bolt action rifles.
Battalion 1944 includes all the classics like Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and Headquarters, as well as a new mode called Wartide. This one sounds good for those in for the long haul, putting two teams of five against one another across 24 rounds of attack and defuse. It’s Search and Destroy from the sounds of it, although players can also earn money, Counter-Strike style, to unlock better weapons as the match progresses.
It looks decent, to be honest, although it appears as if Bulkhead has been having difficulties maintaining a steady player base. This F2P weekend is probably a big push towards raising Battalion 1944’s profile, so fingers crossed for the fans that it picks up some traction.
As tends to be the case, Bulkhead is also running a 50% discount alongside the free weekend if you want to keep the game permanently. Prices are going to vary from territory to territory but that brings it down to a very affordable £8 here in the UK.
