History’s all well and good but there’s only so long we can spend thinking about which King Richard married his horse before we begin to ponder how awesome it would be if a bloke called Zeus did actually hurl lightning bolts from the sky. Fortunately, it appears Microsoft thinks in much the same way.
Adam Isgreen, creative director for the Age of Empires franchise, has said Age of Mythology has not been forgotten by Microsoft during all the buzz around Age of Empires. The mythical take on real-time strategy was an Age of Empires spin-off that caused a few folks to turn their nose up at its god battling ways, although it’s still gathered quite a following over the years.
“It’s great to see how much love there is for Age of Mythology because I love it too”, said Isgreen during a chat with Eurogamer. “it’s more of a… less accurate history. It’s super loose, people just have fun, and I love that too.
There’s a lot going on in the world of Age of Empires right now, include the remastering of the original trilogy as well as the juicy potential of Age of Empires 4. Looking further afield though, Isgreen has said Microsoft’s Age of Empires studio does plan to circle back around to Age of Mythology at some point.
“We’re going to be doing a patch for Age of Mythology Extended Edition really soon”, continued Isgreen, “because there are some exploits and some things out there that we know players would love us to get rid of, so we’re going to be doing that. After we get through the Definitive Editions for the three here, and AoE 4 is kind of rolling, then we’re going to look back and see what we can do with Myth, because I love Myth. We’re not going to leave it behind, we’ll figure out what to do with it then.”
First up though is Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition. There’s a beta test running right now so selected folks are being emailed with details on how to access. Then, a little further afield, Relic Entertainment is still hard at work on Age of Empires 4. It was a total no-show at E3 2019, although we expect to hear a bit more later this year or early in 2020.
