There was a marked disparity between what we were shown of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order during E3, and the impressions from the assembled throngs of journos. The reaction to the live stream was tepid, at best, while those who got a chance to go hands-on with an extensive gameplay demo came away both impressed and name-checking Metroid Prime, which goes down as a win in my books.

Thankfully, EA has now blown the lid off the behind-closed-doors gameplay demo for SWJ: Fallen Order, revealing close to 27-minutes of uninterrupted gameplay footage.

In it, we see our hero, Cal, splash-land on the Wookie planet of Kashyyyk. He’s in the River of Origin, to be precise, and there’s a war raging between the Empire, and their army of AT-ATs, and the Rebel forces trying to hold out. Cal quickly clambers up one of these hulking metal beasts and makes it one of his own. It’s all very, very Uncharted in the early stages, emphasising scale while keeping the platforming nice and simple. You’re here for the ride, you’re not here to think.

Things begin to open up towards the middle of the demo though, with the player seemingly free to head off in a few different directions and explore. Respawn has cited heavy influence from Metroid, Castlevania, and Souls in terms of how exploration works, and you can begin to see the first signs of this influence creep out during the last 10 minutes of the demo.

Respawn has also been busy explaining why it chose Unreal Engine 4 for Jedi Fallen Order, rather than Frostbite or Valve’s Source engine.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is out on November 15th for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
