‘It’s hard to get excited about’ PS5 and Xbox Scarlett says PlatinumGames producer

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Scarlett? They’re just going to be boring boxes according to PlatinumGames’ Atsushi Inaba, producer of games such as Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101, and God Hand.
Speaking to VGC, Inaba was asked what he thought of Sony and Microsoft’s plans for the next generation consoles. “It’s OK,” said. “And by that I mean, I’m sure that things will move faster, graphics will be better and maybe it will be easier with less wait times… that’s good for the consumer.
His expectations sound pretty tempered though, admitting “But it’s more of the same, quite frankly, compared to previous generations. It’s nothing that’s disruptive or super innovative, if you ask me.”
The angle Inaba is coming from is an example of how consoles have morphed over the years, and our perception with it. The console hardware itself used to be inventive and unique, occasionally offering up the types of games that weren’t really possible anywhere else. Today though, consoles have increasingly become not much more than pared down PCs, which leaves Inaba with little to get excited about from the generational leap.
“Consoles are using very similar chips and graphics cards to what you see on PCs, but maybe slightly updated. None of it seems unique to that hardware anymore,” Inaba continued. “It’s hard to get excited about stuff that kind of already exists, but has been repurposed to a certain degree.”
A big fat thumbs down for the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett from Inaba then, but where does it believe the next potentially interesting development in gaming is going to come from? Well, it turns out he’s keen to see what cloud platforms such as Google Stadia bring to the table. “Cloud platforms represent innovation and something very, very different – they’re platforms that excite me and where I feel there is a lot more innovation happening.”
