If you’re anything like me, you came away from Gears 5’s segment at Microsoft’s E3 2019 showcase a whole lot more confused than when you went in. Microsoft spent 10 minutes talking about a new mode while showing us nothing but arty-farty cut-scenes. An odd choice when the game was only three months out from launch.

Thankfully, The Coalition and Microsoft have laid out Gears 5’s new Escape mode in a much easier to digest form – a video. Gears 5: Escape Explained does exactly what it says on the grizzled tin, running us through what we can expect from the three-player co-op mode.

I feel so much wiser after watching it, I won’t lie. In my head, Escape was just a straight rush through hordes. It’s actually a little more in-depth than that. Players must infiltrate a hive of enemies, scavenge for weapons, plant a bomb, and then try to get out of there alive. Along the way, there are safe rooms to rest up and stock up on ammo, while each character will have an ultimate ability which can turn the tide of battle.

Make it out of a hive alive and you’ll earn experience, skill cards, and customisations. You can then up the difficulty and head back in with your new gear, providing additional bonuses for how fast you can complete it.

Gears 5 comes to PC and Xbox One on September 10th. In the meantime, we went hands-on with the Gears of War 5 technical test on PC. You can find our Gears 5 Low vs Ultra Graphics Comparison and our Gears 5 Beta PC Performance Report and Benchmarks.
