Bungie has announced both Destiny 2: Shadowkeep and Destiny 2: New Light have been delayed. Both were originally scheduled to launch on September 17th but they’ve now been pushed back a few weeks to October 1st.
Shadowkeep is Destiny 2’s large-scale annual expansion which is hoping to drastically revamp the game, while New Light is the new free-to-play version of Destiny 2 designed to onboard players to get the good stuff as quickly as possible.
As for the reasoning behind the delays, “We didn’t make this decision lightly,” wrote Bungie in a statement. “We know for some of you (us too), Destiny releases are events where you take time off of work or develop a sudden sickness that keeps you from school or work (we get it, a bunch of our team takes some time off to go on their own Destiny Jacket Quest). We’re sorry for screwing up your plans and we wanted to share this information as quickly as we could.”
That’s the official line of course, although the attention-hogging cloud that is Borderlands 3 probably helped the decision along too. Creeping further away from Borderlands 3’s September 13th launch date can only help matters
This delay is already a tangible benefit for Bungie in parting ways from Activision. They’ve got free rein to take more time if necessary rather than be railroaded into a specific release date months or even years ahead.
