Hinterlands has dropped first trailer for The Long Dark: Episode 3 – Crossroads Elegy, the long-awaited continuation of its Wintermute storyline. It’s more than two years since Episode 2 so it’s safe to say that fans have been chomping at the bit for an update. They need chomp no longer though, because Episode 3 – Crossroads Elegy will be launching on October 22nd, 2019.
The staggered release of The Long Dark’s story campaign hasn’t exactly done the title any harm though. It’s kept us talking about the game for years and, along the way, it’s sold a mightily impressive 3.3 million copies. It’s put Hinterland in the enviable position of being able to take their time, of building a game and growing it over a matter of years. They’ve been able to adapt and change based on fan feedback, sometimes with wholesale alterations. The end result is one of the best survival games around, and fairly unique in its genre for not running like hot garbage *squints at Ark and Rust*.
In The Long Dark: Episode Three – Crossroads Elegy you play as Dr. Astrid Greenwood for the first time. She’s voiced by female Shepard, Mass Effect fans. Dr. Greenwood is facing blizzards in Pleasant Valley while using her healing skills to help out survivors in the wilderness.
“We aren’t merely here to build something and put it out into the world, ignorant of its flaws and values, waiting for our players to tell us what we have made or where we should take it,” wrote Hinterlands founder Raphael van Lierop, in a heartfelt message to fans.
“That lets us off the hook, and ignores the critical part we play in the dialogue. We are working to create something that has its own inner values, its own truth, and we’re striving to create the best version of that experience we can. That’s what we owe our players. We owe it to them to create something they cannot find anywhere else. We owe it to them to have a clear vision for what we are creating, and then the will to bring it to life.”
In a really awesome move, Hinterlands has added a ‘Time Capsule’ feature to The Long Dark. Head on over to the official website and they’ve got the Steam branch names and passwords for 14 different historical versions of The Long Dark. You can go back and see how The Long Dark has changed with each major update. In theory it’s only going to get better with each update but this is a great little curio for gaming historians. Be warned each version will play havoc with your game saves, so do make some back-ups before you begin messing around.
If new rather than old is your priority then you’ve only got about four weeks to wait – Episode 3 – Crossroads Elegy comes to The Long Dark on October 22nd for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
